Imagine if your Wi-Fi could detect your vital signs, your toothbrush could predict early signs of oral cancer, your wearable device could trigger an alert if you are having a seizure, or patients with PTSD could attend group therapy in a virtual, immersed environment. That imagined world may not be far off with the way technology is advancing.  While the opportunities are significant, they are not without risk.

In this class, we will study recent technology innovations with equity, transparency, and ethics in mind. We will explore the design, implementation, and evaluation of user-driven prototypes. The first part of the semester will focus on the theoretical methods for design and evaluation, including requirements gathering, survey design, ethnography, rapid prototyping, and evaluation techniques. The theoretical knowledge will be supplemented with hands-on group projects, including a final project. The later part of the semester will focus on special topics, including bias in AI, fairness, future of work. Students will work as a team to carry on a final project that may involve interactions with stakeholders, developing a working prototype, and evaluating it through deployment.


Use of laptop is prohibited during the lecture time.
